Well, with 3 little boys, it is amazing and the hand of God that has kept us from having a major injury leading in an ER trip for our family! I certainly do not hope for one anytime, for anyone!!!
Last night, we had our family's 1st ER visit. And it was for me...
It was just a usual Tuesday afternoon -- we were getting the van packed up and getting ready to head out to soccer practice. Robert had just called to say that he was on his way home. "Great -- we'll be able to leave in the next 10-15 minutes!" I thought.
While sitting on the floor trying to put together a new soccer goal to take with us, I was joined by Seth, our sweet little 20-month old, who is in the hands-on learning/copy-cat stage. He had apparently grabbed a Philips's head screwdriver and was walking with it behind me. As he rounded my right shoulder, he lost his balance and was falling, so he grabbed ahold of me and some how that sent his right arm -- with the screwdriver -- flying directly into the corner of my left eye. I never saw it coming, didn't have a chance to blink or react in any way. I just turned, ducked and covered, trying to figure out what in the world had just happened. My eye was immediately flooded with tears, and I tried to blink them back to see if I could still see out of that eye. It took a few minutes, but thankfully I knew that I could still see and that the damage was contained to the sclera (the white part), and not to the visual field. (Thank the Lord!!!)
Robert got home shortly after all of this, and took a look and decided it really needed medical attention, given the nature of the injury, and the multitude of possible problems that could come up. Of course, at ~4:30, the eye clinic was closing soon and had no after-hours clinic, so our only choice was to head to the ER. The staff was absolutely wonderful and I was (shockingly) back and in a room within 15 minutes of arriving! They checked everything out, tested all my visual fields, and decided that it was contained bleeding and bruising that would heal with time -- they gave me some antibiotic eye ointment to use for a week to prevent an infection, and a tetanus shot (which has made my arm REALLY sore!!).
I am afraid to even think about all of the "what ifs" and possible ways that this scenario could have played out differently! I am just thanking God for His protection and for the best possible outcome in an otherwise bad situation!
And hoping for no more emergencies for us!!!!
